Leipzig Congress 2013

“RICHARD IST LEIPZIGER”

International Richard Wagner Congress 2013

Andrea Buchanan

Members of Wagner Societies are most welcome and are indeed encouraged to attend the annual Congresses. There is, I think, a perception among our members that these events are only for the Committee and that the event consists mainly of business meetings of the International Richard Wagner Verband. This is absolutely not the case as the Congress is also very much a cultural event with many operas and concerts on offer, as well as plenty of tours and visits to places of musical and historical interest in the area in which the Congress is held.

An Introduction to the Leipzig Congress by Thomas Krakow, Vice-president of The Richard Wagner Verband International.

The Richard Wagner Verband Leipzig Invites! “Hail, to the City of my birth …” that‘s how Richard Wagner opens the flattering adulation of his Saxon birthplace where their relationships, however, were not always harmonious. But that estrangement was lifted when Franz Liszt rapturously told his son-in-law Richard Wagner about the grand success of the first performance of “Der Ring des Nibelungen” under the direction of Angelo Neumann in 1878, in the Neuen Theater Leipzig. The Leipzig version of the “Ring” began its worldwide triumph with the presentation by Neumann and his artists.

It all began in Leipzig.  Here he was born, developed into a musician and composer, here he was heralded as musical genius, and now he has returned to us.  The Wagner- City is part of Leipzig, a city of music, and both belong to Middle Germany, a region of incomparable musical riches. The Richard-Wagner-Verband Leipzig seeks to celebrate the Leipziger Richard Wagner and make his presence visible again.  We had the grave stone of his mother and his sister Rosalie at the Old Johannisfriedhof restored, and we initiated the placement of a memorial for his mother Johanne Rosine in the Heinrich-Schütz city of Weissenfels.  We turned to Königsberg and were able to have a plaque placed in the Königsberger Dom to remember his presence and his marriage there with Minna Planer.  We invite you to discover the footprints of Wagner in Leipzig and also to honor the City where in 1909 the Richard Wagner-Verband deutscher Frauen was founded.  Let‘s celebrate Richard Wagner‘s 200th birthday in his hometown!
